Registering Your Domain Name
The starting place for an online presence of your own, whether a website or blog, is your Domain Name.
This will be your online real-estate so needs to be something branded to you, your product or service.
If it is a personal blog you are looking to create then this could be your name i.e. www.mikesmith.com, www.meetmikesmith.com, www.askmikesmith.com, www.joinmikesmith.com etc.
If a business, then aim to include keywords that describe your business i.e. www.myhomebusiness.com, www.petfood.com, www.cheapcars.com etc.
Of course you could have a fancy name of your choice i.e. www.wackygadets.com, www.metoyou.com etc.
Points to consider:
- Avoid hyphens, although there is nothing stopping you doing this
- Keep it simple
- Something easy to spell
- Short as possible
- A .com which is universally known and used
Whatever name you decide is really up to you. However, you want a name you will stay with as you will spend a lot of time and effort to promote this name.
I’m sure the name will not be easy and therefore worth spending the time and effort getting one you like. Share ideas with your friends and family.
Be aware whatever name you come up with must be available. This is where you could become frustrated only to find the name you want is already taken.
To search for a domain, you can go to any of the domain registration sites i.e. GoDaddy, Hostgator, Bluehost etc. I find GoDaddy really useful and helpful.
You can use GoDaddy to search and purchase domain names.

Once you have decided on a domain name, purchase it. This is the start of your brand and an adventure.
Once you have your domain name set up, it is now time to do something with it. If considering building your own website, then the next thing you need to do is sign up for a hosting account……
